Course on EU Defence & Security: New threats, new responses | College of Europe. Bruges, 18-20 March 2026

23 / 01 / 2026

An ever-changing international stage and new threats such as cyber-attacks, climate change, hybrid threats and global terrorism, has had a significant impact on the development of EU defence and security policies in recent year, notably with the adoption of the Strategic Compass in 2022, and the White Paper for European Defence – Readiness 2030.. This seminar is a unique opportunity to get a thorough understanding and practical approach of how the EU is addressing and prioritising its EU security and defence agenda, especially considering increased geopolitical instability and continued wars near the EU border.

The programme of this course analyses how the EU is boosting its ambitions, efforts, and tools to address rapidly evolving security challenges and defence needs both within the EU and outside its borders. Throughout the course, participants will receive a complete understanding of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), the institutional mechanisms linked to it and the state of play on how the EU is acting on the defence and security front (internally and externally) and facing new threats (in particular, cyberthreats and climate change) with key partners (institutional, private sector and the non-state actors).
